Yonemitsu, Aiko Kimura GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: grade 4 OBJECTIVE(s): To explore in base 4 RESOURCES/MATERIALS: Cuisenaire Metric Blocks 3 unit cubes (natural) 3 four rods (purple) 3 four squares (purple) 1 four cube (purple) ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: 1. Count up to 3 ones and say, one more will make it a four. 2. Place a fours rod by the 3 ones and show that the fours rod has one more unit that the 3 ones. Then say four has its own place. 3. Take the ones away and show the fours rod. 4. Count up to 3 fours and say, one more four will make it a sixteen. 5. Place a fours square to the left of the 3 rods to show that the fours square has one more rod than the 3 rods. Then say, sixteen has its own place. 6. Take the fours rods away and show the fours squares. 7. Count up to 3 sixteens and say, one more sixteens will make it a sixty-four. 8. Place the fours cube to the left of the 3 squares to show that the fours cube has one more square than the 3 squares. Then say, sixty-four has its own place. 9. Take the fours squares away and show the fours cubes.
